Many different martial arts systems have different belts to represent different grades; therefore below is World Tang Soo Do’s belt system with a description of what the particular belt represents. Our belt system reflects on the seasons throughout the year with each different colour representing a different stage of achievement. (Gup translates to mean colour grade) |

White Belt: This is the beginners belt representing a primitive stage of achievement. Thus, the seed as it lies dormant beneath the snows of winter. |
Orange Belt: Represents new growth which appears in spring. |
Green Belt: Represents the speedy development of youth as summer arrives. |
Brown Belt: Represents power, stability, agility, weight and wisdom. This stabilising stage, both mentally and physically , analogous to the plants which curtail their growth and prepare to flower in late summer. |
Red Belt: Represents blood, life, energy, attention and control. The student’s power and techniques begin to bloom and ripen. |
Cho Dan Bo: Represents maturity, respect and honor. Cho Dan Bo translates to Black Belt Candidate. The student must now prepare mind and body for the final step needed to attain Black Belt. |
Black Belt: Represents mastery, calmness, dignity and sincerity, Black Belt is the final stage of one life cycle and the beginning of the next. This we see that it is not only the end of one stage but, more importantly, the beginning of a path which leads up through the ranks of higher Black Belts to true mastery. |
One of the trickiest ability is to be able to tie your belt correctly, so below is a diagram which will help all students to achieve this: |
